Today is the United Nations International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking. Around the world, people renew a commitment that costs nothing to say and is worth everything to live: that life is worth more than anything drugs ever promised.

This day isn't about slogans. It's a day to look honestly at what is already working — and put our weight behind it so it reaches further.

The principle that works

For decades, the most effective approach to drug prevention has rested on one quiet conviction: no one — especially a young person — wants to be lectured about what they can or cannot do.

What works is the opposite. Give people the facts. Trust them with the truth. The Foundation for a Drug-Free World puts it precisely:

"It provides the facts that empower youth to choose not to take drugs in the first place. Additionally, the Truth About Drugs campaign consists of activities they can join which popularize drug-free living. These activities are simple, effective and can involve people of all ages."

This isn't preaching. It's respect. It is treating young people as capable of reaching the right conclusion when they hold the truth in their hands. And it works — because the conclusion is theirs, not someone else's imposed on them.

The impact being created

The Foundation for a Drug-Free World is a nonprofit public benefit corporation that empowers youth and adults with factual information about drugs so they can make informed decisions and live drug-free.

Through a worldwide network of volunteers, 100 million drug prevention booklets have been distributed. Tens of thousands of drug awareness events have been held in some 180 countries. Truth About Drugs public service announcements have aired on more than 500 television stations.

These materials and activities have helped people around the world learn about the destructive side effects of drugs and, through that knowledge, make the decision themselves not to use them.

In Greece, this work happens every week. In classrooms, on radio waves, in city squares, on summer evenings, in winter streets — the same hand reaching out with the same booklet, the same truth, to the next person who needs it.

Spreading the truth — DrugFreeLife GR

A more recent extension of this work is the Greek educational channel DrugFreeLife GR on YouTube (@drugfreelifegr) — carrying the same truth, with full-length educational videos on YouTube and short pieces on Facebook, TikTok and Instagram. Purpose: to counter the misinformation surrounding drugs.

Every view is one person who spent time with the truth instead of the misinformation that fills the same feeds the rest of the day.

I bow to all who join the campaign against drugs

Every number above is the work of someone who simply cared to help. A volunteer who gave up a Saturday morning to stand in a square. A teacher who opened their classroom. A parent who handed a booklet to their child's friend. A donor who funded the next print run. A staff member who organised the next seminar.

And prevention is only one side of the equation. For those who have already crossed the line into addiction, the campaign continues through the dedicated work of rehabilitation. Programmes like Narconon — the international drug rehabilitation network — offer a proven path out of addiction, restoring people to a drug-free life so they can become part of the message themselves. I had the opportunity to work alongside these people when I went to Narconon Europe to train so I could stand beside the people in front of me who need not only the truth, but also a road back. I admired them. It takes great will, persistence, and patience to do this work. That is why I bow to all who work in rehabilitation centres.

To everyone working in rehabilitation — in Greece, in Europe, in every centre that takes a person broken and helps them rebuild — a great thank you. And to everyone who has carried the Truth About Drugs campaign forward — in Greece and around the world — a great thank you. Stellar results don't come from a single message. They come from thousands of small, consistent acts of telling the truth one more time, to one more person, and giving one more person the road back.

Four ways you can help — starting today

This article will find you on a single day. The cause continues every day after. If you want to be part of the next chapter, here are four concrete steps you can take starting today:

  1. Share the videos and follow. Send the link drugfreelife.gr to one person you care about, and subscribe to the DrugFreeLife GR YouTube channel. One share + one subscribe is enough to start a chain.
  2. Educate. Order Truth About Drugs booklets for your area — your office, your neighbourhood, your child's school — from notodrugs.gr. The Foundation provides everything you need to start a local prevention activity. It also provides educational material for schools.
  3. Volunteer. Come to the Greek campaign at notodrugs.gr. A few hours a month is enough to make a real difference.
  4. Support rehabilitation. If you or someone you love is facing addiction, Narconon offers a proven road back to a drug-free life. Pass the solution on to anyone who needs it.

A real team is not people who do what you say. It is people who take responsibility because they see the goal as their own.
